Muladhara: The Root or First Chakra

Location:
The first chakra or Muladhara chakra is also known as the base or root chakra. It is located at the base of the spine near the coccyx, the easiest way to locate this chakra is by sitting down keep your arm parallel to your body and place your hand, palm up under your bottom!

So now you have found it what are its properties and what can it do for you? The Muladhara chakra is associaed with the property of earth and if you look at the images you will see this often depicted in diagrams.

Properties:

The qualities of the earth are the qualities which one can associated with this chakra. In India the earth is known as 'Dharti Maa' or Mother Earth. What do you think about when I say that...Mother Earth? To me this brings feelings of security strength and foundation, all qualities which we associate with the earth are also applicable to the first chakra. The issues that this chakra relates to are around foundations, roots, grounding and understanding your right to be here on earth. Security and shelter are the main requirements with greed as a negative aspect.

Visual Representation:

Yellow yantra square, surrounded by four red petals represents the four directions of Earth. The main colour associated with this chakra is Red, and the animal is the seven trucked elephant. The Sanskrit letters of the chakra petals are Varn, Sarn, Sharn, Sxarn.

Additional Information:

The sense of smell and prana or energy of the earth link in with the first chakra. Deities: Each Chakra has a Manifestation of the Shiva and Shakti Deities. Baby Brahma - Ever watchful creator, brings peace of mind and calms fears. Dakini Shakti - Protectress, Creator, Preserver, Destroyer. Alravata the seven trucked elephant. The Bija Mantra is Lam, repetition of this mantra whilst concentration on the chakra and to help visualising the colour will help to activate and balance the chakra.

Kundalini Shakti lies coiled like a snake in a downward pointing triangle. Meditation of the 1st Chakra awakens the Kundalini and starts the upward flow.

Age group most likely to be affected is from birth to age 7. The planetary association with the muladhara is the planet Mars.

 

Svadhisthana: The Second Chakra

Location:

The Svadhisthana, bit of a mouth full not to mention a spelling nightmare!!! So from now I shall refer to it as the second chakra, and it is located behind and above the genital area. It is also known as the sex chakra or lower chakra. The endocrine glands located here are the ovaries and testicles. So now you have found it what are its properties and what can it do for you? The second chakra is associaed with the property of water.

Properties:

Where the first chakra was linked with foundations and had no movement associations, this chakra like water is an expression of movement and emotions. Procreation, family ties, emotions and sexuality are mastered at this level. Establishing a gender identity is the main focus at this chakra, being able to express freely and without judgement.

Visual Representation:

This chakra has 6 petals and is represented by a silver crescent. Each petal has a Sanskrit letter Bam, Bham, Mam, Yam, Lam and Ram. The main colour is orange. Associated with the sense of taste and the prana or energy of water. The vehicle of the bija mantra is a fire breathing crocodile. Repetition of Bija Mantra-Lam, removes insecurities associated with this Chakra.

Manipura: The Solar Plexus or Third Chakra

Location:

The Manipura chakra is known as the third chakra or solar plexus chakra. It is located at near the naval. Some believe that there is a separate naval chakra on the naval and the solar plexus is slightly higher. For our purposes there is one chakra and it covers the naval area about the size of your palm.

Properties:

The manipura chakra qualities are similar to that of fire, where transformation, energy, power, ego and the relation to the outside world are prominent. Where the second chakra deals mainly with personal relationships, this chakra deals with your relationship to your surroundings and your world. Many powerful business men have balanced and active third chakras, and this is predominately where they function from.

Visual Representation:

The colour associated with this chakra is yellow. A fiery fed triangle, surrounded by 10 blue petals, like the hottest part of the flame.

Anahata: The Heart Chakra

Location:
Found at the level of the heart but in the center of the body, this chakra deals with expressions of love, faith and devotion. Located at the center of the seven chakras, the anahata or heart chakra is the connection between the lower and higher chakras. This is the place where true unity occurs and a removal of duality is truly understood.

Properties:
The quality of this chakra is air, compare this with where the lungs are situated and the exchange of air occurs in this physical location. Lack of an activity in this chakra, can cause heart problems and lack of compassion. Over activity can be the reason for over emotional and dependent people. The physical sense of touch is also a property of this chakra.

Visual Representation:
The main color focus at this level is green and pink. A smoky-green surrounded by 12 Red Petals. The Deer is the animal linkage in this chakra. The qualities of the deer such as dreamy eyes, graceful and pre-occupied demeanor, as that of one in love is the connecting factor.

Deities: Each Chakra has a Manifestation of the Shiva (male) and Shakti (female) Deities. Ishana - Detached from the World. Peaceful, Beneficient and Ever-Youthful. Kakini Shakti - Goddess of Spiritual Music, Poetry and Art. The Antelope is the carrier of the Bija Mantra-Yam.

Repetition of Bija Mantra-Yam, opens the Heart and helps control Vital Energy. Each petal has a Sanskrit letter Kam, Kham, Gam, Gham, Nnam, Cam, Cham, Jam, Jham, Nyam, Ttam, and Ttham.

Age group most likely to be affected is from 21 to 28 years of age. The planetary association with the anahata chakra is the planet Venus. Which makes sense as Venus is considered the Goddess of Love.


Vishudha, Throat of Fifth Chakra

Location:
This, the fifth chakra or throat chakra is located at the throat, half way between the chin and the start of the breast bone. Endocrine glands supported by this chakra is the thyroid.

Properties:

The quality of this chakra is sound, and the sense is hearing. This chakra governs communication, speeach, hearing, self expression and is the source of creativity. Artists act predominately from this chakra. An underative throat chakra can be the cause of shyness, lack of expression, and blocks creativity.

Visual Representation:

The main colour focus at this level is a sky blue. The visual representation is a white circle surrounded by 16 grey-lilac petals.

Deities: Each Chakra has a Manifestation of the Shiva (male) and Shakti (female)Deities. Panchavaktra - The Great Teacher, Eternal Knowledge, Balance and Non-Duality. Shakini Shakti - Bestower of Higher Knowledge and Powers. Memory, Will, Intuition and Improvisation. Gaja the Elephant - Carrier of the Bija Mantra-Ham. Confidence, Hearing and In Tune with Nature.

Each petal has a Sanskrit letter (Am, Amm, Lm, Llm, Um, Uum, Rm, Rrm, Lm, Llm, Em, Alm, Om, Aum, Aam, and Ahm).

Age group most likely to be affected is from 28 to 35 years of age. The planetary association with the fifth chakra is the planet Jupiter.

This chakra is the seat of creativity, so all the artists and creative people you know and those who are well spoken and have an exceptional command of language operate from this level.

 

Ajna: The Brow or Sixth Chakra

Location:

The Ajna chakra is also known as the third eye or third chakra, and is located between the eyes at the midpoint of the forehead. The endocrine gland supported by this chakra is the pineal gland. Mastering this chakra stops the aging process and is also a function of the hormones within the pineal gland.

Properties:

The main property of this chakra is light. The ajna chakra governs intuition and awareness of a higher self. Once this chakra is mastered it is believed that the individual can see past, present and future clearly using his third eye. Telepathy becomes a regular sense.

Visual Representation:

The main colour associated with this chakra is indigo. While the diagramatic representation is a white circle, 2 luminous petals in which all the elements are combined.

Deities: Each Chakra has a Manifestation of the Shiva and Shakti Deities. Ardhanarlshvara - Half-Male, Half-Female, Shiva-Shakti, No longer Separate. Hakini Shakti - Imparts Awareness of Non-Duality.

Repetition of the powerful Bija Mantra-Om. Elevates the speaker form everyday reality, through concentration, to the meditative state. Each Petal has a Sanskrit letter Ham and Ksham. Age group most likely to be affected is from birth to age 36 to 42. The planetary association with the ajna chakra is the planet Saturn.

Sahasrara: The Crown or Seventh Chakra

Location:

The Sahasrara or seventh chakra is also known as the crown chakra, and is located at the top of the head. This chakra is the one which is the hardest to master and is the key to enlightenment or ascension.

This chakra is the seat of Divine where the individual becomes totally aware of his relation to the source or God or whatever you would like to call it. Once mastered it is said that the individual can enter a state of Samadhi. Which is a pure and blissful state.

Visual Representation:

The main colour associated with this chakra is white. While the diagramatic representation is a rainbow coloured thousand petaled lotus.

Additional Information:

This chakra does not have the duality of male and female deities, the supreme source of inspiration becomes the Guru or teacher within oneself.

When the Kundalini is raised up to Sahasrara Chakra, the illusion of the "individual self" is dissolved. Repetition of the powerful Bija Mantra-Om will help in its activation. Age wise depending on karma this chakra can be active from any age. The planet associated is called Ketu.

Between the Ajna and Sahasrara chakras is a sub chakra just above the ajna called the soma chakra. Activation of this chakra the nectar of bliss is released. This is very important for serious Yogi's, and I do not mean the weekly hatha yoga person.
